White Sox-Blue Jays Preview
Apr 14, 2010 - 5:30 AM By MATT BEARDMORE STATS WriterChicago (3-4) at Toronto (5-2), 7:07 p.m. EDT
Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen hasn't been happy with his team's approach at the plate thus far. It probably didn't matter what the team's approach was their last time out.
Nearly no-hit in its last game, Chicago looks to bounce back against the Blue Jays on Wednesday when it tries to give left-hander John Danks more support than in his previous start.
Already voicing his displeasure with his team's hitting woes the past week, the outspoken Guillen couldn't find much fault with his team following Tuesday's 4-2 loss to Toronto. With 12 strikeouts and one hit allowed - a two-run homer by former Blue Jay Alex Rios in the eighth inning - left-hander Ricky Romero was just too good against the overmatched White Sox (3-5), who are now batting .205.
"You've got to tip your hat," Guillen told the White Sox' official Web site. "This guy threw the ball good. Nothing you can do about it. We didn't have that many good at-bats. Obviously, the reason is he threw the ball very, very effectively."
Danks (0-0, 1.50 ERA), who is looking for his first career win versus Toronto in four starts, was effective Friday, but he did not factor in the decision as the White Sox went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position in a 4-3, 11-inning loss to Minnesota.
Danks yielded just two runs and eight hits over six innings.
Right-hander Brandon Morrow (0-0, 9.00) looks to keep Chicago's bats cold after a poor effort in his Blue Jays debut. Acquired from Seattle in the offseason, the 25-year-old yielded three runs during a 36-pitch first inning Friday in Baltimore. Morrow, though, was saved from the loss as Toronto rallied with two runs in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory.
Morrow went five innings, walking five while surrendering four hits and five runs.
"He was just excited. He was a little erratic," Blue Jays catcher John Buck told the teams' official Web site. "Personally, I think you can just chalk it up to excitement. New team. Opening Day. You even have veterans say that's what it was -- even at the end of their careers. It's something that's just, that special thing kind of gets you sometimes."
In one career start against Chicago, Morrow issued six walks and allowed three runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 4-3, 14-inning victory Sept. 17.
Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells continued his hot start Tuesday with an RBI double in the third inning. He is batting .345 with five homers and 10 RBIs. He didn't drive in his 10th run last season until April 28.
Rios, acquired off waivers from the Blue Jays on Aug. 10, is 4 for 8 in the series.
Toronto, winners of six of seven, has won 11 of 12 at home against Chicago.
