Final
Tigers-Indians Preview
May 8, 2010 - 11:03 PMVideo
Detroit (16-13) at Cleveland (10-17), 1:05 p.m. EDT
Max Scherzer wasn't able to help the Detroit Tigers extend their season-high winning streak in his last outing. He will look to continue his team's dominance of the Cleveland Indians when he takes the ball at Progressive Field on Sunday.
Scherzer will try to bounce back from two rough outings as Detroit goes for its 11th straight victory over Cleveland in the finale of this rain-shortened series.
Scherzer (1-2, 6.47 ERA), who gave up six runs and a career high-tying 10 hits against Minnesota on April 28, allowed a career-high 10 runs in a 10-4 loss to the host Twins on Monday. That snapped the Tigers' five-game run.
"We were on a winning streak and I wanted to go out there and give the team a chance to win and keep it going," Scherzer said following his 4 1/3-inning outing. "That's probably the most frustrating thing."
The loss started Detroit's season high-tying three-game slide, which ended Saturday with a 6-4 victory after the series opener was rained out Friday.
The Tigers (17-13) have frustrated the Indians lately, winning 18 of 22 since the beginning of last season. Detroit has taken 10 straight from Cleveland since a 6-1 loss at Progressive Field on Aug. 2.
"We've won a few against them, but they have some thump in their lineup and that could turn around in a hurry," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.
The Indians (10-18), though, are hitting .224 with one home run during a five-game losing streak. They struck out at least 10 times in each of the last six games and will try to avoid their first six-game slide since dropping 11 in a row Sept. 13-24.
Mitch Talbot (3-2, 2.88) will try to get Cleveland back on track as he faces the Tigers for the second time this season. In a 4-2 loss in Detroit on April 10, the right-hander gave up four runs and walked a season-high five in five innings.
Talbot went 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA in his next three starts before surrendering season highs of five runs and eight hits in a 5-1 loss to Toronto on Monday. He also gave up a career-high three homers after not allowing one in his previous 19 1/3 innings.
Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera, 2 for 4 lifetime versus Talbot, is batting .520 with two homers and seven RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak. Cabrera had a go-ahead, two-run single off Kerry Wood in the seventh inning Saturday and has batted .345 with three homers and 14 RBIs in the last 22 games against the Indians.
"It's not just Cleveland," Leyland said. "Cabrera has games against everybody. He's just a great player."
Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson has been just as good lately. The rookie recorded his 15th multihit game of the season Saturday and is batting .488 with a .512 on-base percentage during a nine-game hitting streak. Jackson has reached base in 24 straight games.
Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner went 3 for 4 on Saturday and has batted .381 in his last six games.
Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera is likely to be in the lineup Sunday after missing the last four games with a strained quadriceps. He would have started Saturday, but was held out due to the wet conditions.
Detroit has won eight of 10 at Progressive Field since the start of last season.
