Indians-White Sox Preview

Jun 5, 2010 - 5:02 AM By JEFF MEZYDLO STATS Senior Writer

Cleveland (19-33) at Chicago (23-30), 7:05 p.m. EDT

Jake Peavy and the Chicago White Sox likely expected his first attempt at earning career victory 100 to have come much earlier this season.

Instead, the right-hander gets his first crack at achieving that milestone in his 12th start as the White Sox seek to even their weekend set with the visiting Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.

In his first full season with Chicago (23-31), Peavy (4-4, 6.23 ERA) has been inconsistent, not throwing the ball nearly as well as he did most of his 7 1/2 years with San Diego.

Peavy is 99-72 lifetime with a 3.41 ERA, and 7-4 with a 5.14 ERA in 14 appearances since the Padres dealt him to the White Sox at the trade deadline last season. His current ERA the highest of his career and second-highest on the team.

Peavy allowed five runs and 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings Sunday, but avoided a third straight loss thanks to generous support and got credit for Chicago's 8-5 win at Tampa Bay.

He is 1-2 with a 5.59 ERA in five starts against the Indians, including 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in three this season. In his last start against Cleveland on May 25, he allowed six runs in six innings in a 7-3 road loss and was outpitched by Mitch Talbot (6-4, 3.78), also Saturday's scheduled Indians starter, who yielded two runs in seven innings.

"That's what makes baseball such a great game. On any given day a guy like Mitch can beat a guy like Peavy," Indians manager Manny Acta said.

Given Talbot's track record this season, if he beats Peavy again it won't come as a shock.

The rookie right-hander has won both of his starts against the White Sox, posting a 1.69 ERA in those games. He threw his first career complete game in a 6-2 home win over Chicago on April 16.

"It's fun to match up with Peavy because he works so quick," Talbot said. "I like to work fast. It's a fun challenge. He keeps me in rhythm."

Talbot will be looking to bounce back from a loss. He gave up three runs in 6 1-3 innings of an 11-2 defeat to the New York Yankees on Monday.

Cleveland (20-33) opened this series with a 10-1 rout Friday, improving to 7-3 against the White Sox in 2010. The Indians are 13-30 versus all other opponents.

Jhonny Peralta had four hits with four RBIs and Justin Masterson earned his first win of the year on the same day the Indians learned star Grady Sizemore will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee.

"Life without Grady here is not easy," Acta said. "We're suffering through that right now and we're going to have to be prepared for that for the rest of this season. It's an opportunity for some of these young kids to step up and contribute."

Infielder Luis Valbuena is one of those young players who could. Though batting .170, Valbuena had three hits Friday and is 5 for 9 in his last two games.

Peralta is 12 for 36 with seven RBIs against Chicago this season.

Alexei Ramirez hit his fifth homer for Chicago, which has lost three of four to open a nine-game homestand. Ramirez is 10 for 31 against the Indians in 2010.
