Blue Jays-Indians Preview
Jun 29, 2010 - 5:35 AMVideo
Toronto (40-36) at Cleveland (27-47), 7:05 p.m. EDT
After an extended rough stretch, the Cleveland Indians have a chance to put together their first three-game winning streak in almost three weeks Tuesday night when they continue their home series with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Jayson Nix's suicide squeeze in the sixth inning helped the Indians (28-47) beat Toronto 2-1 on Monday for their second straight victory after a season-high seven game losing streak. The victory was Cleveland's third in 14 games, and first when scoring two or fewer runs since a 2-1 win over Minnesota on Aug. 6.
Cleveland hasn't won more than two in a row since a four-game run June 9-12.
Nix has three hits in four games since he was acquired off waivers from the Chicago White Sox on Thursday.
"Anytime you get a sign like that, especially in a tight game, with a new team, it feels good," Nix said.
Cleveland, which was swept at home by the Blue Jays (40-37) last month, has won twice in eight games at home against Toronto.
Extending their current winning stretch could prove difficult against Toronto's Brandon Morrow (5-5 4.50 ERA), who's pitched very well since Jose Molina was inserted as his batterymate. Morrow is 2-1 with a 1.32 ERA in his last five starts - all with Molina behind the plate.
"He's been calling great games," Morrow told the Blue Jays' official website. "I think when he calls games throwing a lot of offspeed stuff, it kind of helps to keep me dialed back."
Morrow, 3-4 with an 8.81 ERA in seven starts with John Buck catching, allowed five hits and struck out eight in eight innings of a 5-0 win over St. Louis on Thursday.
"I'm kind of in that cruise mode," Morrow said. "I've been able to figure out an intensity level where I'm just kind of cruising. When I get into a little jam I can turn it up a little bit or dial it back down when you get out of trouble."
The right-hander will try to help the Blue Jays avoid a third straight loss and seventh in nine games. That might not be easy against Cleveland's Fausto Carmona (6-6, 3.64).
The right-hander is 2-0 with 2.96 ERA in four starts against the Blue Jays. He allowed two runs in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-4 loss to Toronto on May 5.
Carmona, however, will have to rebound after giving up seven runs in four innings of a 12-3 loss at Philadelphia on Thursday. It was the second time this season he failed to go at least six innings.
Toronto's Jose Bautista had two hits Monday, and is 6 for 15 against Cleveland this year. Bautista is tied for the major league lead with 20 homers - two coming against the Indians.
