Division rivals Athletics, Mariners meet in season opener

Apr 2, 2007 - 2:03 PM Oakland (0-0) at Seattle (0-0) 6:35 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics finished on top and the Seattle Mariners ended up on the bottom of the American League West last season.

The Athletics will run out a new Opening Day starter on Monday when they visit the Mariners.

Oakland was unable to retain ace lefthander Barry Zito, who signed a seven-year, $126 million contract with San Francisco, and also lost slugger Frank Thomas in the offseason.

Zito, the 2002 Cy Young award winner, was the team's Opening Day starter last season and won 102 games for the A's over the past seven years. Thomas turned his Comeback Player of the Year award into a two-year, $18 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays.

But Oakland usually has its way with the Mariners. The Athletics won 17 of the 19 meetings last season.

That's the primary reason why the Mariners finished in last place in the AL West for the third straight season.

The Mariners spent the offseason overhauling their rotation, adding Jeff Weaver, Horacio Ramirez and Miguel Batista.

Felix Hernandez will start for Seattle. The burly righthander went 12-14 with a 4.52 ERA last season. He turns 21 years old on April 8.

Dan Haren will oppose Hernandez. The righthander went 5-0 with a 2.95 ERA against the Mariners in 2006.
