Wakefield, Red Sox face Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Fresh off a strong performance from highly touted Japanese import Daisuke Matsuzaka, the Boston Red Sox will look for similar success from veteran knuckleballer Tim Wakefield.

After dropping their season opener, the Red Sox seek their third straight victory when they meet the winless Texas Rangers.

Boston made headlines when it posted a record-setting $51 million bid for exclusive negotiating rights with Matsuzaka, who agreed to terms on a six-year deal worth $52 million in December.

Matsuzaka was brilliant in his highly anticipated major league debut, allowing one run in seven innings in a 4-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

Wakefield will have a tough act to follow on Friday. The righthander was 7-11 with a 4.63 ERA in 23 starts last season.

This will be the home opener for the Rangers, who will start Robinson Tejeda. The righthander was 5-5 with a 4.28 ERA in 14 starts last season.

Texas was swept by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in its season-opening series. The Rangers managed just seven runs and 15 hits in the three losses.
