Cardinals, Astros seek first win of the season

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The defending World Series champions are hoping Adam Wainwright can give them a lift again

The St. Louis Cardinals will start Wainwright, their closer in last year's run to the World Series title, when they face the Houston Astros on Friday.

With the departures of starters Jeff Weaver, Jeff Suppan and Jason Marquis, the Cardinals have moved Wainwright and Braden Looper from the bullpen to the rotation. Wainwright struck out Carlos Beltran with the bases loaded to finish off the National League Championship Series against the New York Mets and also recorded the last out in the World Series clincher over Detroit.

But Jason Isringhausen is back as the Cards' closer after missing the second half of last season with a hip injury.

The 25-year-old Wainwright went 2-1 with a 3.12 ERA in 61 appearances in 2006 for the Cardinals.

St. Louis was outscored, 20-2, in losing three games to the Mets to open the 2007 season.

Houston is also coming off a sweep, losing three times to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Wandy Rodriguez starts Friday for the Astros. The lefthander finished 9-10 with a 5.64 ERA in 30 outings last season. However, Rodriguez is 0-3 with an 11.20 ERA in his career against St. Louis.

Former National League MVP Albert Pujols is off to a 1-for-10 start. He is 0-for-6 with two walks against Rodriguez.
