NL West rivals Dodgers, Giants open series

Apr 6, 2007 - 4:20 PM LA Dodgers (1-2) at San Francisco (1-2) 10:15 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Barry Bonds helped Bruce Bochy win for the first time as manager of the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. The two will face a familiar rival on Friday when the Giants host the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Bochy managed the San Diego Padres to two straight NL West titles before leaving to take over the Giants. Last season, the Padres edged the Dodgers for the division crown. Los Angeles settled for the wild card.

Bonds hit an RBI double as the Giants salvaged the finale of a three-game series with a 5-3 victory over San Diego on Thursday.

Ray Durham also drove in two runs in a four-run fifth inning for the Giants, who were outscored, 12-3, in the first two games of the series.

"It's good to get on the board, believe me," Bochy said after his first win as Giants manager.

Bonds hit his 735th career homer on Wednesday.

The Dodgers salvaged the finale of a three-game series at Milwaukee with a 5-4 win on Wednesday. Olmedo Saenz delivered a two-run double in the eighth inning.

Brad Penny starts for the Dodgers on Friday. The righthander was 16-9 with a 4.33 ERA last season.

The Giants counter with lefthander Noah Lowry, who was 7-10 with a 4.74 ERA last year. Lowry has a career 2-0 mark against the Dodgers.
