Ortiz makes season debut as Giants host Dodgers

Apr 7, 2007 - 4:19 PM LA Dodgers (2-2) at San Francisco (1-3) 3:55 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Russ Ortiz begins his career revival when the San Francisco Giants take on their hated rival.

Ortiz, who was unceremoniously released by the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, makes his season debut Saturday when the Giants host the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Despite signing a four-year, $33 million with Arizona in 2004, Ortiz was released after posting a 5-16 record in 1 1/2 seasons.

The 32-year-old righthander almost won a World Series ring with San Francisco in 2002, leaving in the seventh inning of Game Six with a 5-0 lead.

But he watched from the bench while his teammates failed to hold the lead and then lost Game Seven to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Dodgers counter Saturday with Derek Lowe (0-1, 13.50 ERA), who walked five and allowed six runs on Opening Day. The veteran righthander is 2-4 with a 3.91 ERA against the Giants in his career.

Los Angeles won the first game of the series Friday, 2-1. Brad Penny scattered 10 hits in seven innings and Jeff Kent and Wilson Betemit each drove in a run.
