Lackey, Haren square off as Angels host Athletics
Apr 7, 2007 - 6:25 PM Oakland (2-3) at LA Angels (4-1) 9:05 pm EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- John Lackey got the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim started on the right track. He hopes to continue steering them in that direction.
Lackey looks to pick up his second win in as many starts Saturday when the Angels host the rival Oakland Athletics in an American League West Division clash.
The 28-year-old Lackey (1-0, 0.00 ERA) tossed five solid innings on Opening Day to lead the Angels to a 4-1 victory over Texas.
He hopes for similar success Saturday against Oakland, which historically has had fits with the righthander. Lackey owns a 9-2 record with a 2.89 ERA in 18 career starts vs. the Athletics and won his last three outings against the division rivals last season.
Oakland counters with Dan Haren (0-1, 0.00), who pitched well on Opening Day but took the loss as a result of some poor defense. The righthander allowed four runs - none earned - and four hits in six innings. He is 2-4 with a 5.09 ERA in seven career starts against Anaheim.
Angels slugger Vladimir Guerrero has gotten off to a hot start, blasting three homers and collecting nine RBI in the first five games. The All-Star hit a three-run blast in the seventh inning Friday night to provide the winning margin in Anaheim's 5-2 win.
