Cubs finally score off Capuano but lose to Brewers
Apr 9, 2007 - 12:13 AM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs finally scored against Chris Capuano. The Milwaukee Brewers finally beat Wade Miller.Capuano pitched five scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth and Geoff Jenkins and Craig Counsell each drove in three runs as the Brewers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-4 victory over the Cubs.
Trying to avert a weekend sweep, the Brewers had the right guy on the mound in Capuano (1-0), who pitched 26 scoreless innings in three wins against the Cubs last season.
The streak continued as Capuano threw five scoreless innings while the Brewers built a 6-0 lead against Miller (0-1), scoring four times in the second inning and twice in the fifth.
"The first five innings, all my pitches were working and I felt like I was at the top of my game," said Capuano, who improved to 8-2 all-time against the Cubs. "My command was tight and my pitches had a lot of good finish." Miller had been 11-1 in his career against Milwaukee, including a 6-0 mark at Miller Park.
"My record against them doesn't mean anything really," said Miller, who yielded six runs and nine hits in four innings. "I hadn't pitched in a spring training game since late March, so I was a little rusty out there. I didn't make my best pitches."
Jenkins hit a two-run homer in the second inning and Gabe Gross, who was making his first start of the season, followed with a home run over the right field wall. Damian Miller doubled and Capuano capped the four-run inning with an RBI single.
Counsell, who went 3-for-5, doubled to start the fifth and came around on singles by J.J. Hardy and Prince Fielder. Hardy scored on a grounder by Jenkins, increasing the lead to 6-0.
Miller enjoyed much of his success against Milwaukee when he pitched for Houston. Now 30, he is less than two years removed from shoulder surgery and signed with the Cubs as a free agent in the offseason.
"I worked too hard to get to this point, so I'm going to put this one behind me pretty quickly," Miller said.
Meanwhile, Capuano seemed to pick up where he left off against the Cubs, retiring the first 11 batters before giving up a two-out single to Derrek Lee in the fourth inning.
The Cubs finally broke through in the sixth against Capuano. Jacque Jones led off with a single, Alfonso Soriano doubled and Jones scored when Capuano mishandled a slow roller by Ryan Theriot.
Lee followed with a two-run double and Capuano walked Aramis Ramirez before being replaced by Matt Wise.
"(Capuano) started laboring there and falling behind," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "Sometimes there's not an explanation, it just happens."
"I just got a little tentative throwing the ball," Capuano said. "I started to get away from my aggressive approach and started trying to miss bats a little, picking around the zone. "
Michael Barrett capped the inning with an RBI single, pulling the Cubs within 6-4.
Chicago threatened in the eighth when Derrick Turnbow hit Lee with a pitch and yielded a single to Ramirez. But Turnbow, an All-Star closer last season, struck out Mark DeRosa, retired Barrett on a liner to left and struck out pinch hitter Daryle Ward.
"I like the fact we didn't roll over today," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We lost an opportunity there in the eighth inning but we tried to battle back from a 6-0 deficit, which is always tough to do."
Counsell delivered a bases-loaded triple off Scott Eyre in the eighth after the Cubs intentionally walked Rickie Weeks.
"The triple in the eighth was big," Counsell said. "They had grabbed some momentum with their four runs, so it was important to hold onto a game like this."
