Pujols looks to stay hot against Pirates
Apr 9, 2007 - 1:40 PM St Louis (2-4) at Pittsburgh (4-2) 1:35 pm EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals have depended upon the bat of Albert Pujols for most of the past four seasons. That bat is finally starting to show up.
Pujols has worn out Pittsburgh Pirates pitching in the past and will look to continue the trend when the Cardinals visit PNC Park on Monday.
The 27-year-old slugger began the season with a 1-for-17 slump, but broke out of it on Sunday with two hits, including his first homer of the season, and three runs scored. He owns a career .369 average with 32 homers in 339 at-bats against the Pirates.
St. Louis will send converted reliever Braden Looper to the mound Monday. Looper (0-1) allowed three runs in six innings Wednesday against New York, snapping a string of 572 straight relief appearances. He has made 23 career appearance against Pittsburgh with a 2.03 ERA.
The Pirates counter with 25-year-old Ian Snell (0-0). The righthander struck out 11 in six innings in his first start this season, earning a no decision against Houston.
Snell has had trouble with Pujols in the past, surrendering three homers to the former MVP on September 3.
Pittsburgh got reigning batting champion Freddy Sanchez back off the disabled list Sunday.
The second baseman showed no ill effects from a sprained knee ligament, notching two hits, including a double, driving in a run and scoring a run in the Pirates' 6-3 victory over Cincinnati.
