Pettitte looks to rebound in second start of season
Apr 10, 2007 - 1:49 PM NY Yankees (3-3) at Minnesota (4-2) 8:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees received the first quality start from their rotation on Monday. They would like Andy Pettitte to provide another one when they face the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday.
Carl Pavano pitched seven strong innings in Monday's series-opening 8-2 win over the Twins for his first victory since May 22, 2005.
Pavano and four other starters had all failed to reach the sixth inning in New York's first five games.
Pettitte (0-0, 3.60 ERA) started New York's second game of the season last Thursday, when he gave up four runs - two earned - in four innings against Tampa Bay. The start was his first as a Yankee since the 2003 World Series after spending the last three seasons with his hometown Houston Astros.
The veteran lefthander also pitched one inning of scoreless relief against Baltimore on Sunday. Pettitte is 7-5 with a 3.71 ERA in 16 career starts against the Twins.
Alex Rodriguez, who became the first Yankee in club history to hit five homers in the first six games, has 10 RBI in his last three games.
New York has scored 20 runs in winning two of its last three games.
Leadoff hitter Johnny Damon, who has been nursing a mildly strained right calf muscle, started for the first time since the season opener and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored on Monday.
Torii Hunter went 2-for-3 with an RBI double and Jason Kubel singled in a run for the Twins in the series opener. Minnesota has scored a total of five runs in its last three games.
Boof Bonser (0-0, 3.00) takes the mound for the Twins. The righthander made his season debut last Tuesday, allowing two runs and three hits with six strikeouts in six innings but not factor in the decision in a 3-2 win over Baltimore.
Bonser has never faced the Yankees.
