Tomko makes first start of season for Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Brett Tomko will try to show the Los Angeles Dodgers he deserves to be in the rotation.

Tomko will make his first start of the season on Tuesday when the Dodgers face the Colorado Rockies.

Tomko was slated to begin the season in the bullpen, but he was put into the rotation after Hong-Chih Kuo went on the disabled list late in spring training.

Tomko (NR) began 2006 in Los Angeles' rotation before being sent to the bullpen after compiling a 7.68 ERA in June. The 34-year-old righthander made 29 appearances out of the bullpen in the second half, going 2-1 with a 3.64 ERA. Tomko is 6-8 against the Rockies with a 4.05 ERA in 23 games, including 17 starts.

The Rockies will counter with offseason acquisition Rodrigo Lopez (1-0, 1.29 ERA). The veteran righthander limited Arizona to two runs - one earned - and six hits in an 11-4 win on Wednesday.

Colorado took the series opener, 6-3, as Garrett Atkins homered and drove in three runs and Brad Hawpe scored two runs for the Rockies.

Nomar Garciaparra, the 2006 National League Comeback Player of the Year, went 0-for-4 for the Dodgers and is now batting just .154 (4-for-26) with two extra-base hits.
