Tigers, Blue Jays set to open four-game series

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers seek their first three-game winning streak of the season Thursday when they face the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a four-game series.

These teams split an abbreviated two-game series last week at Comerica Park. The third game of the series was postponed due to cold conditions.

Detroit won the final games of its three-game set at Baltimore, allowing just one run in each contest.

On Wednesday, Craig Monroe belted a grand slam in the top of the 12th inning to lift the Tigers to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles.

Mike Maroth (1-0, 7.20 ERA) seeks his second win of the season for the Tigers. The veteran lefthander won at Kansas City on Saturday despite giving up four runs and six hits in five innings.

Maroth hopes to regain his 2005 form, when he posted career highs in wins (14), starts (34) and strikeouts (133). The 29-year-old appeared in just 13 games last season due to an injured elbow.

Toronto counters with Tomo Ohka (0-0, 10.38). The Japanese righthander failed to garner a decision at Tampa Bay on Saturday after he allowed five runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Ohka owns an 11.12 ERA in two career appearances against the Tigers.

Aaron Hill drove in three runs and Troy Glaus homered in his return to the lineup as the Blue Jays posted a 7-4 win over Kansas City on Wednesday. Toronto has won four of its last five games.
