Twins host power-hitting Devil Rays
Apr 12, 2007 - 1:51 PM Tampa Bay (3-5) at Minnesota (5-3) 8:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Carlos Silva looks to contain the bats of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays when he takes the mound for the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a four-game series Thursday.
After going 11-15 with an absymal 5.94 ERA last season, Silva (0-1, 1.80) pitched well in his first outing of the 2007 campaign at Chicago on Saturday.
Silva gave up just one run and five hits in five innings in a 3-0 loss. A righthander, Silva is 1-1 with a 2.84 ERA in three career games against Tampa Bay.
Silva could have his hands full against the Devil Rays, who scored 15 runs in the final two games of their three-game set at Texas.
Tampa Bay will be looking for a better performance from Casey Fossum (0-1, 17.18), who was hammered for seven runs and eight hits in 3 2/3 innings against Toronto on Saturday.
Fossum has no record and a 4.91 ERA in three career appearances against the Twins. The Twins avoided a three-game sweep at the hands of the New York Yankees with Wednesday's 5-1 win.
Ramon Ortiz pitched eight strong innings and Joe Mauer ignited a four-run eighth inning for the Twins, who nearly matched their offensive output from the past four games - six runs.
Tampa Bay ended a four-game skid Wednesday with a narrow 6-5 win against Texas. Ben Zobrist and Carlos Pena each hit solo home runs for the Devil Rays, who lead the majors with 14 homers on the season.
