Struggling Nationals face red-hot Braves in series finale
Apr 12, 2007 - 2:10 PM Washington (1-8) at Atlanta (7-1) 7:35 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - The Washington Nationals try to snap a six-game losing streak Thursday when they face the Atlanta Braves.
Expected to be one of baseball's worst teams, the Nationals have lived up to expectations. They have won just once in their first nine games, losing by at least five runs six times.
Washington has dropped the first two games of this three-game set by a combined 16-3.
After having its string of 14 straight National League East titles snapped in 2006, Atlanta has won seven of its first eight games.
In Wednesday's contest, Chuck James pitched six strong innings and Chipper Jones and Andruw Jones homered in the same game for the 56th time, leading the Braves to an 8-3 victory.
John Smoltz (1-0, 3.75 ERA) takes the mound for the Braves. The veteran righthander is coming off Saturday's win over the New York Mets in which he yielded two runs and seven hits in six innings.
The Nationals counter with Jason Bergmann (0-1, 9.82), who pitched poorly in a 4-3 loss to Arizona last Thursday. He went 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, five hits and six walks.
