Nationals shoot for second straight win vs. Mets
Apr 13, 2007 - 4:25 PM Washington (2-8) at NY Mets (6-3) 7:10 pm EDTFLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- The Washington Nationals are looking for their first winning streak of the season. The New York Mets will rely a highly touted young hurler to prevent that.
The Nationals look for their second straight win Friday when they visit the Mets and rookie Mike Pelfrey, who will make his season debut.
Pegged as the worst team in baseball prior to the campaign, Washington has lived up to expectations, losing eight of nine games before Thursday's 2-0 victory over Atlanta.
A first-round draft pick in 2005, Pelfrey (NR) was recalled from Class A St. Lucie on Thursday. The 6-7 righthander posted a 2-1 record with a 5.48 ERA in four starts in 2006.
Pelfrey won the fifth starter's job in spring training, but New York knew it would not need his services until Friday. He allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits in six innings against Los Angeles Dodgers' affiliate - Vero Beach - in his lone minor league start.
He will be opposed by Nationals Opening-Day starter John Patterson (0-2, 9.35 ERA), who is 1-2 with a 5.18 ERA in 12 career starts against the Mets.
New York won the rubber game of the three-game set with the Phillies, 5-3, on Thursday. Tom Glavine overcame a shaky start to pitch six effective innings and pick up the win.
