Schilling, Carrasco square off as Red Sox host Angels
Apr 14, 2007 - 2:27 PM LA Angels (6-5) at Boston (5-4) 3:55 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox have had no trouble getting quality starts from their pitchers. Curt Schilling hopes to continue the trend.
Schilling takes the mound on Saturday as the Red Sox host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the second game of a four-game series.
Boston starters have surrendered three or less runs in six of eight games this season. Schilling (1-1, 4.91 ERA) began a stretch of four straight quality starts last Sunday when he held the Texas Rangers to just one run in seven innings.
The 40-year-old righthander struggled in his first start of the season, allowing five runs in four innings - his shortest start in a decade.
The Angels will counter with veteran reliever Hector Carrasco (0-0, 1.80). Pressed into duty due to Kelvim Escobar's right shoulder injury, Carrasco will make his 10th career start on Saturday.
Carrasco has made five appearances this season - all in relief - allowing one earned run in seven innings.
Red Sox slugger Manny Ramirez is 7-for-14 with a homer and eight RBI in his career against Carrasco.
Escobar's injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for Anaheim's rotation. Bartolo Colon remains on the disabled list following offseason shoulder surgery, and Jered Weaver is scheduled to make his first start of the season on Monday. He is on the disabled list due to biceps tendinitis.
