Halladay faces Red Sox in rubber game of series
Apr 19, 2007 - 1:53 PM Boston (8-5) at Toronto (8-6) 12:37 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- On paper, a pitching matchup of Roy Halladay and Julian Tavarez skews heavily in favor of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Halladay (2-0, 2.35 ERA) will take the mound Thursday when the Blue Jays face the Boston Red Sox in the rubber game of a three-game series.
The 6-6 righthander won the Cy Young award in 2003 and remains one of the league's premier pitchers. He allowed just one run in 10 innings last Friday in a win over Detroit.
However, Halladay owns an 8-7 career record with a 4.60 ERA in 27 games - 24 starts - against the Red Sox. That's a full run worse than his career ERA (3.60).
The Red Sox will counter with Julian Tavarez (0-1, 9.00). The lanky sinkerballer has made a career of moving back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen, counting 86 starts among his 701 career appearances.
Tavarez made six starts at the end of the 2006 campaign and pitched well enough to earn a spot in Boston's 2007 rotation when Jonathan Papelbon moved back into the bullpen. The righthander struggled in his first start of the season, allowing four runs and walking five in four innings of an April 7 loss at Texas.
Toronto won the first game, 2-1, but the Red Sox bounced back with a 4-1 win on Wednesday.
