Santana, Twins seek sweep of Mariners
Apr 19, 2007 - 2:07 PM Minnesota (9-5) at Seattle (5-5) 6:35 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Johan Santana and the Minnesota Twins look to continue their road success on Thursday when they try to complete a three-game sweep of the Seattle Mariners.
The Twins have outscored opponents, 19-7, in their last three road wins, including a 5-4 victory over the Mariners on Wednesday that ended in dramatic fashion.
Jose Vidro stroked an RBI single with two outs in the ninth, but Twins second baseman Luis Castillo nailed Adrian Beltre at the plate with a great relay throw to thwart the rally.
Minnesota turns to Santana (2-1, 3.60 ERA), who is 6-1 with a 3.00 ERA in 14 career games - seven starts - vs. Seattle.
The two-time Cy Young Award winner struggled in his last outing, allowing four runs and six hits in seven innings in a 4-2 home loss to Tampa Bay on Friday. Santana had gone 17-0 in his previous 24 starts at the Metrodome.
However, the lefthander yielded just one hit in seven shutout innings while striking out nine in a 3-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on April 8.
Santana will be opposed by lefthander Jarrod Washburn (0-1, 3.75), who allowed four runs - three earned - and seven hits in a 5-2 loss to Texas last Friday. He is 5-3 with a 3.52 ERA in 11 career starts vs. the Twins.
