Suppan haunts another former team
Apr 19, 2007 - 10:57 PM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers did not sign Jeff Suppan in the offseason just to beat his former teams. It's just working out that way.Suppan pitched six strong innings and J.J. Hardy drove in four runs as the Brewers completed a two-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 7-5 victory.
After beating the St. Louis Cardinals in his last outing, Suppan (2-2) followed with another win against one of his former teams. He yielded three runs and six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
"The key is, when you go out there, minimizing the damage," Suppan said. "You're going to have difficult innings out there. The first inning was that inning for me. Today was really about the offense. They came out and set the tone and it was my job to really just stay out of the big inning. I thought we did a good job."
Suppan, who played for the Pirates in 2003, became the 16th straight starter for the Brewers to last at least five innings.
"He pitched very, very well," Milwaukee manager Ned Yost said. "He kept making pitches. He really labored in the sixth inning and that was enough. He was starting to wear down a little bit but the starting pitching the last two nights has been very, very good."
Hardy, who came within a triple of hitting for the cycle, ignited the Brewers offense with a two-run homer that sparked a four-run first inning. He followed with a double in the next inning and then capped off a three-run fourth with a two-run single to give the Brewers a 7-1 lead.
Two relievers followed Suppan and pitched an inning apiece before closer Francisco Cordero struck out the side in a perfect ninth for his fifth save in as many chances.
"It's one of the best innings you can pitch besides (getting) three outs on three pitches," Cordero said. "It feels real good when you strike out the last three guys to get a save."
Yost notched his 300th victory as Milwaukee manager, making him only one managers in Brewers history to reach the milestone.
Zach Duke (1-2) struggled mightily on his 24th birthday, allowing seven runs and 11 hits in four innings.
"I didn't really establish command of my fastball inside," Duke said. "It's been my focus, and it just wasn't there. There's nothing really glaring that's off, it's just timing."
"He was not locating his sinker," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said. "He threw a lot of balls that had a lot of plate and were elevated. When he does that, he's going to get hit."
Xavier Nady had three hits and three RBI for the Pirates, who have dropped eight of their last 11 games after starting 3-0.
