Red-hot Rodriguez, Yankees face rival Red Sox
Apr 20, 2007 - 1:38 PM NY Yankees (8-6) at Boston (9-5) 7:05 pm EDTBOSTON (Ticker) -- A series between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is hard to overshadow. But red-hot Alex Rodriguez has all eyes on him.
Rodriguez looks to continue his torrid April when the Yankees renew their rivalry with the Red Sox at Fenway Park on Friday.
Maligned for a lackluster 2006 season and for failing to come through in the clutch, Rodriguez has come out swinging this campaign, posting a major league-leading 10 homers and 26 RBI not even a month into the season.
On Thursday, the Yankees rallied for six runs with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning in an 8-6 victory over Cleveland. Rodriguez capped the dramatic comeback with a three-run homer over the center field wall.
It was the second game-winning blast for the two-time American League MVP, including a grand slam against Baltimore closer Chris Ray in a 10-7 triumph here on April 7. Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 19 games dating back to last season.
Friday's contest will be the first of 19 regular-season matchups between the American East rivals this season.
Andy Pettitte (1-0, 0.69 ERA) will take the mound for the Yankees in his first start against Boston since Game Six of the 2003 AL Championship Series.
Pettitte is familiar with Red Sox sluggers Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz. Ramirez is hitting .424 (25-for-59) with three homers and 18 RBIs against him, and Ortiz .409 (9-for-22).
He will be opposed by Curt Schilling (2-1, 2.84), who is 7-5 with a 4.39 ERA in 14 career regular-season outings against New York. The righthander allowed just four hits over eight innings in an 8-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim last Saturday.
Boston has won five of its last six games, including a 5-3 victory over Toronto on Thursday.
