Pujols, Cardinals look to right the ship vs. Cubs

Apr 20, 2007 - 2:30 PM St Louis (6-9) at Chicago Cubs (6-9) 2:20 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) - Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals are not playing like world champions.

Pujols and the struggling Cardinals aim to avoid their fifth straight loss Friday when they meet the Chicago Cubs in the opener of a three-game series.

After batting .331 with 49 homers and 137 RBI last season in helping the Cardinals to their first World Series title since 1982, Pujols is off to an extremely slow start in 2006. The slugger is hitting just .190 through 15 games.

With Pujols struggling, the Cardinals have scored more than three runs just four times.

Converted closer Braden Looper (2-1, 2.37 ERA) takes the mound for the Cardinals. The righthander has been a bright spot this season, lasting at least six innings in all three of his starts.

Looper is 1-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 32 career relief appearances against Chicago, including a 15 2/3 inning scoreless streak spanning his last 13 outings.

The Cubs counter with Ted Lilly (1-1, 2.37 ERA), who is holding opponents to a .164 batting average. However, he has just the one victory in three starts since his teammates have supported him with just seven runs.

On Sunday, Lilly allowed just one run over six innings with 10 strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to Cincinnati. While with Toronto in 2005, Lilly won his lone career start against St. Louis.

Lilly will be looking to give the Cubs another strong outing after Rich Hill worked eight dominant innings in a 3-0 win at Atlanta on Thursday.

Chicago has lost seven of its last 10 games.
