Lieber makes first start as Phillies face Reds

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Jon Lieber makes his first start of the season for the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday when they meet the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a three-game series.

A key member of the Philadelphia rotation the past two seasons, Lieber (0-0, 11.57 ERA) was sent to the bullpen this spring. However, the 37-year-old regained his spot in the rotation after manager Charlie Manuel made the curious decision to send ace Brett Myers to the bullpen earlier this week.

Expected to contend in the National League East Division this season, the Phillies have lost 10 of their first 14 games.

The Phillies again could be without reigning MVP Ryan Howard, who sat out Thursday's 4-2 win at Washington with a sprained ligament below his left knee. He is day-to-day.

Cincinnati, which is trying to avoid its second three-game losing streak of the season, sends Kyle Lohse (1-0, 2.53) to the mound. Lohse gave up just four hits and struck out a career-high 12 in a 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

The righthander is 0-1 with a 2.19 ERA in two career starts against the Phillies.
