Schilling and Cabrera meet in Orioles-Red Sox series opener
Apr 25, 2007 - 2:33 PM Boston (12-7) at Baltimore (11-9) 7:05 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Curt Schilling was a young righthander for the Baltimore Orioles 19 years ago. Now that man is Daniel Cabrera.
Schilling and Cabrera face off Wednesday in the opener of a two-game series between the Boston Red Sox and the Orioles at Camden Yards.
The 40-year-old Schilling got roughed up by red-hot Alex Rodriguez last Friday, surrendering two homers and five RBI to the Yankees slugger while earning a no decision. He pitched seven innings and struck out five, allowing five runs.
Schilling (2-1, 3.81 ERA) began his major league career with Baltimore in 1988 and made 44 appearances - five starts - in three seasons before being traded to Houston in 1991.
The veteran righthander didn't develop into an All-Star until years later in Philadelphia. The Orioles are hoping it doesn't take Cabrera quite as long.
Cabrera is showing signs early in the season of finally reaching elite status as a dominating pitcher. After struggling with his control the past two seasons, the 25-year-old has settled down early in 2007, walking only seven batters in 26 1/3 innings this season.
Cabrera has always had trouble with Boston, however, owning a 1-6 record with a 9.27 ERA and 32 walks in 33 innings against the division rival.
Boston and Baltimore were each riding big winning streaks until dropping two straight games to open the week.
The Red Sox were riding high after their sweep of the rival Yankees gave them a five-game winning streak, but were brought down to earth by Toronto. The Blue Jays outscored Boston, 17-6, in a two-game series at Fenway Park.
The Orioles had their four-game winning streak snapped by Oakland, which took a two-game set at McAfee Coliseum.
