Hamels looks to help Phillies to sixth straight win

Apr 26, 2007 - 2:20 PM Washington (6-15) at Philadelphia (9-11) 3:05 pm EDT

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies seek their sixth straight win Thursday when they meet the Washington Nationals in the finale of a three-game series.

Philadelphia also is aiming for its first sweep of Washington since 2005.

Chase Utley had five hits and knocked in three runs as the Phillies coasted to a 9-3 victory on Wednesday.

Looking to to stay hot, the Phillies send Cole Hamels (2-0, 2.57 ERA) to the mound. The lefthander struck out a career-high 15 batters in a a complete game 4-1 victory over Cincinnati on Saturday.

"I was able to execute even when the count wasn't in my favor," Hamels said. " The motivation we had made us relax a bit. It allowed us to go out and execute."

The lefthander executed his pitches almost brilliantly for the most strikeouts in the majors since Jason Schmidt struck out 16 for San Francisco against Florida on June 6 of last season.

Shawn Hill (1-2, 2.92) has pitched well for the Nationals, allowing more than just two runs in one of his four starts.

The righthander is 1-1 with a 7.45 ERA in two lifetime starts against the Phillies.
