Twins try to get offense going against Tigers

Apr 27, 2007 - 1:36 PM Minnesota (12-10) at Detroit (12-9) 7:05 pm EDT

DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Twins try to get their offense rolling Friday when they visit the Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game series.

Despite snapping a four-game losing streak with Thursday's 1-0 win over Kansas City, Minnesota has failed to score more than three runs in each of its last five games.

Minnesota's recent woes can be attributed to 2006 American League MVP Justin Morneau's 2-for-22 slump and clean-up hitter Michael Cuddyer's 4-for-20 skid over the past five games. The two have combined for one extra-base hit and two RBI.

Tigers starter Nate Robertson (2-1, 2.05 ERA) will be trying to take advantage of the cold bats. The veteran lefthander has been a model of consistency this season, not allowing more than two runs in any start.

Robertson has been tough on Morneau in the past, holding the slugger to just two hits in 18 career at-bats.

The Twins counter with Ramon Ortiz (3-1, 2.48). The veteran righthander has had an ERA over 5.00 in three of his last four seasons, but is off to a hot start with Minnesota, which signed him to a one-year deal in the offseason.

Ortiz has walked only two batters while yielding eight runs in 29 innings so far in 2007.

Twins center fielder Torii Hunter is expected to play, despite leaving Thursday's game after taking a fastball to the face from Zack Greinke and receiving three stitches to close a cut inside his mouth.
