Sammy Sosa goes for homer No. 595 against Towers, Blue Jays
Apr 27, 2007 - 1:45 PM Texas (8-13) at Toronto (11-10) 7:07 pm EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Texas Rangers took a gamble this offseason and signed enigmatic slugger Sammy Sosa. His presence hasn't translated to wins, but the buzz is hard to ignore.
Sosa will try to add another homer or two to his resume when the Rangers visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday for the opener of a four-game series.
Texas signed Sosa to a minor league deal before spring training despite the fact that he sat out all of the 2006 campaign. The slugger earned a spot on the club with a strong spring and has offset a poor batting average (.239) with six homers, leaving him six shy of 600 for his career.
Sosa hit a pair of blasts Thursday in the Rangers' 9-4 loss to Cleveland. Texas has lost three straight and six of eight.
Robinson Tejeda (2-1, 3.55 ERA) will try to stop the skid for the Rangers on Friday. The 25-year-old righthander did not factor in the decision in his last start, yielding three runs and striking out six in 6 1/3 innings as Texas defeated Oakland on Sunday.
The Blue Jays counter with Josh Towers (1-2, 3.44). The righthander allowed five runs - four earned - and nine hits in a five inning loss at Baltimore last Saturday.
Towers has been torched in the past by the Rangers. The 30-year-old owns an 0-3 record with a 7.90 ERA in five starts against Texas.
