Athletics host Devil Rays in opener of weekend series

Apr 27, 2007 - 1:52 PM Tampa Bay (9-13) at Oakland (11-11) 10:05 pm EDT

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics have won with solid starting pitching. When the Tampa Bay Devil Rays have won, it's been because of their bats.

The Athletics host the Devil Rays in the opener of a three-game series Friday.

Oakland extended its own record Thursday by making it through its 22nd consecutive game without a allowing a first-inning run. Athletic starters have a major league-best 2.06 ERA.

Chad Gaudin (1-0, 1.85 ERA) will try to keep the streak intact Friday. The converted reliever has allowed just five runs in 24 1/3 innings, but has just one win to show for his efforts.

The Devil Rays are second in the American League with 112 runs scored and tied for first with 27 homers. However, Tampa Bay is last in the majors with a 6.08 team ERA.

James Shields (1-0, 4.50) will be charged with lowering that ERA on Friday. The 25-year-old matched a franchise record last Sunday with 12 strikeouts while not factoring in the decision against Cleveland. He was let down by his bullpen, which allowed four-ninth inning runs.

Shields likely will not have to face A's slugger Nick Swisher, who is expected to miss the entire series with an injured hamstring.
