Meche looks to help Royals snap skid vs. former team

SEATTLE (Ticker) - Gil Meche returns to the Emerald City, looking to show his former team they made a huge mistake by not re-signing him.

Meche takes the mound Saturday for the Kansas City Royals, who will try to snap a two-game skid when they face the Seattle Mariners, who have won a season-high four straight games.

After starting his career with the Mariners, Meche (1-1, 2.55 ERA) signed a five-year, $55 million deal with the Royals and is making it look like money well spent. He has pitched like an ace, allowing just three runs in his last 21 innings.

In his last outing Sunday, the 28-year-old Meche allowed three runs and eight hits in seven innings, receiving no decision in a 7-4 loss to Chicago.

Without Meche, the Mariners have a 4.90 ERA, the sixth-worst team in baseball.

Seattle sends struggling free agent signee Jeff Weaver to the mound. Weaver (0-3, 13.91) has been hit hard in all of his starts since signing a one-year, $8.5 million contract in the offseason.

In his last start, the ruighthander lasted just three innings and surrendered three run and seven hits vs. the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The Mariners took Friday's series opener, 7-4, by scoring two runs off reliever David Riske in the eighth inning.
