Maddux faces former club as Padres take on Dodgers
Apr 28, 2007 - 3:40 PM LA Dodgers (14-9) at San Diego (12-11) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres' veteran closer couldn't shut the door Friday. They will turn an experienced starter to get back on track Saturday.
Greg Maddux will take the hill against his former team as the Padres try to snap a season-high three-game skid when they face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.
San Diego has lost three in a row, including Friday's 6-4 loss to the Dodgers in which closer Trevor Hoffman - the all-time saves leader - was undone by defensive lapses by his teammates and failed to hold a two-run lead in the ninth inning.
Looking to pick up his club, Maddux (1-2, 4.24 ERA) will face the Dodgers for the first time since signing a one-year, $10 million contract with the Padres in the offseason. But the 41-year-old righthander did not spend much time in Los Angeles.
After being acquired at the July 31 trade deadline from the Chicago Cubs, Maddux posted a 6-3 mark with a 3.30 ERA in 12 starts for the Dodgers over the final two months of the 2006 season.
The four-time Cy Young Award winner has had success against Los Angeles in his career, posting a 13-7 record with a 2.76 ERA in 31 starts - including wins in three of his last four outings.
Maddux lost his last start, allowing four runs and seven hits Sunday in seven innings of a 4-2 setback to Colorado.
He will be opposed by former Padre Brett Tomko (0-1, 2.65), who is 4-6 with a 4.13 ERA in 19 career appearances vs. San Diego. In his last start, Tomko yielded five runs - three earned - and eight hits in six innings of a 7-5 loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday.
Los Angeles snapped a four-game losing streak with Friday's victory.
