Wright looks to haunt former team
Apr 29, 2007 - 1:42 PM Baltimore (12-12) at Cleveland (13-8) 1:05 pm EDTCLEVELAND (Ticker) - After snapping a five-game skid in controversial fashion, the Baltimore Orioles will turn to a pitcher fresh off the disabled list to help them claim their third straight road series.
Jaret Wright will face his former team as the Orioles will meet the Cleveland Indians in the series finale between the teams on Sunday at Jacobs Field.
The Indians, the only club that Wright has never faced, played Saturday's game under protest after Baltimore was awarded a run three innings after the fact. The run, scored on a sacrifice fly in the third inning when Nick Markakis appeared to score before the Orioles' Miguel Tejada was doubled off first base, was originally waived off.
If the protest is successful, the teams might have to play replay part of the game.
Wright (0-2, 6.14 ERA), who is scheduled to return from the disabled list in time to make the start, will make his first start since April 10 after being sidelined with shoulder soreness. He has not lasted more than five frames in either his two previous starts, including his most recent outing when he allowed two runs and four hits over five innings of Baltimore's 3-1 loss to Detroit.
No Orioles starter has pitched through the eighth inning this season and no Orioles starter has gone as many as seven innings since April 12.
Fausto Carmona (1-1, 5.00), who may be making his last start for some time with Cliff Lee scheduled to return from the disabled list in the next few days, will look to help the Indians back in the win column. The righthander allowed two runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings of Cleveland's 5-3 win at Minnesota on Tuesday, outdueling reigning Cy Young Winner Johan Santana.
The win snapped a personal 11-decision losing streak and was his first since major league debut on April 15, 2006. The Orioles have won five of eight on the road since being swept in a three-game series at Minnesota to open the season.
