Devil Rays look to end West Coast struggles

Apr 29, 2007 - 2:40 PM Tampa Bay (10-14) at Oakland (12-12), 4:05 pm EDT

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will be after a rare series victory at McAfee Coliseum when they visit the Oakland Athletics on Sunday.

The Devils Rays and Athletics have split the first two games of the series, putting Tampa Bay in position to improve on its 1-12-1 mark in series played in Oakland.

The Devil Rays' overall numbers in Oakland are equally dreadful as the team is just 20-60 at the venue. Furthermore, Tampa Bay has dropped 10-of-13 games in the state of California.

The Devil Rays send Scott Kazmir (1-1, 4.40 ERA) to mound. The lefthander has not won since April 13 when he had his best performance of the season - allowing two earned runs over eight innings in a 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. In two starts against the Athletics last season, Kazmir went 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA.

The Athletics will counter with Dallas Braden (1-0, 1.50) will be making his second career start and his home debut. The 23-year-old lefthander won his first start on Tuesday, allowing one run and three hits over six innings in a 4-2 win against the Baltimore Orioles.

Oakland entered Saturday's game against Tampa Bay with a league-worst .225 batting average, but the lineup woke up in a 12-5 victory. Travis Buck, Mark Ellis and Eric Chavez each homered in the win. Buck snapped an 0-for-16 slump with his three-run blast in the first inning and eight of his 12 hits this season are for extra bases.

Tampa Bay's Delmon Young needs only four more hits this month to become just the eighth American League rookie in the last 50 years to get 30 or more hits in April.

The Devil Rays have been outscored 22-4 in the first inning this year and have allowed 89 hits in the first frame, including 11 home runs.
