Phillies seeking first win of the season against Braves
Apr 30, 2007 - 1:43 PM Philadelphia (11-13) at Atlanta (15-9) 7:05 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) - The Philadelphia Phillies hope this three-game series with the Atlanta Braves will go better than the previous one.
Looking to finish the month of April on a high note, the Phillies face the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
Expected to contend in the National League East Division, the Phillies opened the season with three straight losses to the Braves en route to a 1-6 start. But the Phillies have played better, moving within two games of the .500 mark.
Jon Lieber (1-0, 3.21 ERA), who began the season in the bullpen, gets the start for the Phillies. The righthander has pitched well in his two starts, going 1-0 and allowing just two runs in 11 2/3 innings. In six career starts at Turner Field, Lieber is 4-2 with a 3.18 ERA.
The Braves counter with Tim Hudson (3-0, 1.22), who has been excellent this season. The righthander has pitched seven or more innings in each of his five starts and has allowed just five earned runs in 37 innings.
In his first start of the season on April 4, Hudson held the Phillies to one run and two hits over seven innings while not factoring in the decision.
While the Braves have traditionally been known for their pitching, its the offense that has paced the team in the early season. Atlanta leads the major leagues with 34 home runs and is third in baseball with 129 runs scored.
Philadelphia outfielder Aaron Rowand had a 16-game hitting streak stopped in Sunday's win over Florida.
Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins leads the National League with nine home runs.
