Cardinals play first game since death of teammate
Apr 30, 2007 - 1:51 PM St Louis (10-13) at Milwaukee (15-9) 7:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) - With heavy hearts, the St. Louis Cardinals open a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday.
On Sunday, tragedy struck the Cardinals after 29-year-old reliever Josh Hancock was killed in a car accident. The Cards postponed Sunday night's game against Chicago.
The Cardinals will take the field for the rest of the season with Hancock's No. 32 on their uniform sleeves. Kip Wells (1-4, 4.70 ERA), who is coming off his worst outing of the season, gets the ball for the Cardinals. Last Wednesday, Wells was ripped for seven runs and nine hits in a 10-3 loss to Cincinnati.
Wells faced Milwaukee on April 14, allowing three runs over seven innings.
After helping the Cardinals win the World Series, Jeff Suppan (3-2, 2.97) signed a four-year, $42 million contract with the Brewers. The veteran righthander beat his former team on April 14, allowing two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols hit the 256th home run of his career on Saturday, moving him ahead of Ken Boyer into sole possession of second place on the Cardinals all-time list. Stan Musial is the Cardinals' all-time leader with 475 home runs.
Brewers shortstop J.J. Hardy has a 10-game hitting streak.
