Peavy hoping to help Padres forget tough loss

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres will be hoping for a long outing from Jake Peavy on Monday when they face the Washington Nationals in the opener of a three-game series.

On Sunday, the Padres endured a 17-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego used five relievers for a total of 12 innings.

Having lost four of their last five games, the Padres send ace Jake Peavy (3-0, 1.67 ERA) to the mound. In his last start on Wednesday at Arizona, Peavy struck out 16 in just seven innings but did not factor in the decision.

John Patterson (0-4, 7.71) gets the ball for the Nationals. The righthander gave up six runs and eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in losing at Philadelphia in his last start Wednesday.

Washington has lost six of its last eight games.
