Young, Webb overpower Dodgers

May 1, 2007 - 6:22 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- After winning a 17-inning marathon on Sunday, it took just two pitches for the Los Angeles Dodgers to fall victim to the resurgent offense of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Rookie Chris Young homered twice and Brandon Webb pitched seven strong innings as the Diamondbacks recorded a 9-1 victory over the Dodgers in the series opener of a three-game set on Monday.

Young led off the contest with a solo shot, taking the second pitch he saw from Los Angeles starter Randy Wolf (3-3) to deep right. He delivered another solo blast to lead off the seventh, as the Diamondbacks scored five or more runs for the fourth time in the last five games after eclipsing that mark just once in five contests.

"Felt good to get us on the board early," Young said. "It was an outside pitch on the black and I squared it up and hit it hard. Everybody is swinging the bat good now. It's good to finally get some hit to drop for me."

Webb (2-1) took advantage of the listless Dodgers, yielding just one run and four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The reigning National Cy Young award winner, who has defeated Los Angeles in each of his last four starts, picked up his first win in three outings despite allowing no more than two runs in any game.

"I felt good out there today," Webb said. "My sinker pitch was working for me today and I got ahead early and used that pitch to my advantage."

Orlando Hudson, who improved his batting average against the Dodgers to .385 (30-for-78), had three hits and has reached base in all 27 games this year.

"We have a good team here and feel like we can win every game," Hudson said. "I feel really good at the plate right now and hope I can keep helping the team win ball games."

After losing five straight contests from April 19-24, Arizona won their sixth straight game - tying a season high.

"That stretch was bad for our team, but it just seemed like we couldn't do anything right," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said. "Right now, it's almost the opposite, because we are getting good all-around pitching and timely hitting."

Wolf, who had pitched six innings in each of his first five outings, surrendered six runs and 10 hits with four walks and five strikeouts in suffering his second consecutive loss.

"I just didn't have control of my pitches tonight," Wolf said. "I felt good warming up in the bullpen before the game but after that I felt like my location was gone."

Andre Either had two hits and drove in the lone run for the Dodgers, who have dropped their last five home games.

"We just couldn't get our bats going against him (Webb)," Ethier said. "He won last year's Cy Young award for a reason. We just have to put this game behind us and come out ready to play tomorrow and get back on the winning track."
