Ponson, Twins take on Devil Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) - Sidney Ponson aims to get on track when the Minnesota Twins take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday.

A promising righthander at the outset of his career, Ponson has struggled with weight and alcohol problems in recent years. Ponson (1-3, 8.44 ERA) has struggled with the Twins, who are in desperate need of a starter in the absence of the retired Brad Radke and the injured Francisco Liriano.

The burly righthander has yielded 17 hits and 10 runs over his last two starts, including four runs and seven hits in six innings - while walking and striking out two - in Wednesday's 4-3 loss to Kansas City.

However, Ponson picked up his lone win this season vs. the Devil Rays, allowing two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 12-5 victory on April 14. He is 7-8 with a 4.28 ERA in 23 appearances - 22 starts - vs. Tampa Bay in his career.

Ponson will be opposed by Edwin Jackson (0-3, 6.10), who has not picked up a win since September 26, 2005 as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his last outing, the righthander allowed six runs - three earned - and eight hits in six frames of a 9-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Wednesday.

The teams split a four-game series in Minnesota earlier this season.
