Hughes, Yankees look to right ship vs. Rangers
May 1, 2007 - 3:20 PM NY Yankees (9-14) at Texas (10-15) 8:05 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) - After a disappointing opening month, the New York Yankees are on a short leash with owner George Steinbrenner. But the club hopes prized-prospect Phil Hughes will help turn things around.
Hughes will make his second major-league start on Tuesday as the Yankees aim to bounce back from a rough April when they take on the Texas Rangers in the opener of a three-game series.
With their payroll that approaches $200 million, the Yankees find themselves in last place in the American League East. They have lost five of six games against the archrival Boston Red Sox, angering their demanding owner.
Steinbrenner made a statement Monday, saying the play by his team has been "unacceptable." He also said he supported manager Joe Torre.
The Yankees can attribute some of their struggles to an injury-ravaged rotation. As a result, they hope to lean on the much-hyped Hughes (0-1, 8.31 ERA), who did not make it out of the fifth inning in his debut last Thursday.
The righthander allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings in a 6-0 loss to Toronto. However, the 20-year-old did show some promise after overcoming some first-inning jitters.
In its last contest, New York suffered a 7-4 loss to the Red Sox on Sunday. Derek Jeter extended his hitting to 17 games with a solo homer, and Alex Rodriguez went 2-for-4 but did not homer - ending April tied with Albert Pujols with 14 blasts, a major-league record for the opening month.
The Rangers will counter with Kameron Loe (1-1, 5.21), who is making his third start after starting the season in the bullpen. In his last outing, Loe yielded seven runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 frames in a 9-4 loss to Cleveland Thursday.
Loe is 1-3 with a a 7.62 ERA in four career appearances - two starts - vs. the Yankees.

Yankees vs. RangersMay 1 10:34 PM - a3017 Not kidding, Hughes was taken out of the game after the first out in the 7th. He was visibly grimacing after the play, clutching his right hamstring (so critical for pushing off the mound). Unreal.
