Struggling White Sox aim to get going against Mariners

SEATTLE (Ticker) - Paul Konerko and the Chicago White Sox's offense struggled in April. Konerko hopes that facing Seattle Mariners starter Jarrod Washburn will turn it around.

Konerko and the White Sox face Washburn and the Mariners in the opener of a two-game series on Tuesday.

Chicago could not get its bats going in the opening month, posting a major league-worst .225 batting average and scoring just 95 runs - tied with Oakland for second-fewest in the American League.

One of the main culprits for the sputtering offense is Konerko, who hit .198 with three homers and 16 RBI in the first month. However, the first baseman has always done well vs. Washburn (1-2, 2.96 ERA).

The slugger is hitting .385 with four homers in 39 career at-bats against Washburn, who tossed a complete game shutout in his last outing. The lefthander allowed just three hits in a 2-0 victory at Oakland last Wednesday.

The White Sox wcounter with Javier Vazquez (2-0, 3.75), who had his worst start of the season his last time out. The righthander allowed a season-high five runs and seven hits in six frames but did not receive a decision in last Tuesday's 9-7 win at Kansas City.

Seattle has won five of its last six games, including a 5-1 victory against the Royals on Sunday. Jose Vidro extended his hitting streak to 12 games for the Mariners

Chicago has lost three of its last four games.
