Brewers look for rare sweep of Cardinals
May 2, 2007 - 1:13 PM St Louis (10-15) at Milwaukee (17-9) 1:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- J.J. Hardy and the Milwaukee Brewers are one of baseball's biggest early-season surprises.
While Hardy will look to continue his torrid hitting, Chris Capuano will seek to remain unbeaten as the Brewers aim to complete a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
It would be Milwaukee's first three-game sweep of St. Louis since September 13-15, 1999.
Labeled as a defense-first shortstop during his young career, the 24-year-old Hardy has shown some offensive pop this season. He has six homers and 19 RBI in just 25 games and owns a 12-game hitting streak.
Thanks in part to Hardy, the Brewers are off to their best start since beginning the 1987 campaign with a 20-6 record. Milwaukee is also looking to go nine games over .500 for the first time since April 24, 1998.
Capuano (4-0, 3.21 ERA) is looking to become the first Milwaukee starter to go 5-0 since Bill Wegman won in his first six outings in 1994.
In his last start, Capuano allowed one run and five hits in six innings in a 4-1 win at Houston Friday.
He will be opposed by Anthony Reyes (0-4, 5.73), who went 1-1 with a 7.36 ERA in three starts against Milwaukee last campaign. This season, he is just looking for some run support.
The righthander has allowed no more than four runs and pitched at least five innings in each of his starts but is still winless.
