Perez takes mound as Mets hope to avoid sweep

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Oliver Perez assumes the role of stopper for the New York Mets as they look to avoid getting swept in a three-game series by the Florida Marlins on Wednesday.

Perez (2-2, 3.86 ERA) aims to prove that he can beat a team other than the Atlanta Braves. The lefthander has three regular-season wins for New York and all have come against Atlanta.

Perez faced the Marlins twice last season and did not fare well, going 0-1 with a 6.10 ERA.

He will be opposed by Anibal Sanchez (2-0, 4.39), who allowed three runs and nine hits in five innings against Philadelphia last Friday but did not figure in the decision.

Florida won Tuesday's game, 5-2, behind Ricky Nolasco, who allowed just one run and six hits in five innings.

David Wright finally hit his first homer of the campaign, but it was not enough as the Mets left eight runners on base.
