Garcia hopes to help Phils win rubber game against Braves
May 2, 2007 - 1:23 PM Philadelphia (12-14) at Atlanta (16-10) 7:35 pm EDTATLANTA (Ticker) -- After a disastrous start, the Philadelphia Phillies have righted the ship. But Freddy Garcia has yet to come along for the ride.
Garcia will take the hill for the Phillies in the finale of a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
After barely missing the playoffs last season, Philadelphia was thought to be a contender this season in the National League East. After a 4-11 start, the Phillies are starting to play like a contender.
Philadelphia has won eight of its last 11 games, including a 6-4 victory at Atlanta on Tuesday. Aaron Rowand had two RBI.
But the Phillies have not been able to count on Garcia (1-1, 5.65 ERA), who won 17 games with the Chicago White Sox last season before being traded to Philadelphia in December.
Garcia started the season on the disabled list and has yet to toss more than five innings in any of his three outings since his return. Last Friday, he yielded four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in a 6-5 win over Florida.
Garcia will be opposed by Chuck James (3-2, 4.72), who allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings in his last outing - a 9-7 win at Colorado last Friday. He is 2-0 with a 2.18 ERA in four appearances - three starts - vs. Philadelphia.
The Braves have won three of their last five games.
