Orioles hope to avoid sweep against Tigers
May 2, 2007 - 1:45 PM Baltimore (12-15) at Detroit (15-11) 1:05 pm EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- The Baltimore Orioles try to avoid a sweep when they visit the Detroit Tigers Wednesday in the finale of their three-game series.
The Orioles won eight of nine games between April 12-22, but have just one win in their past nine games since, dropping three games below .500.
Veteran Steve Trachsel (1-2, 4.13 ERA) will try to turn the tide Wednesday. The 36-year-old righthander has been surprisingly effective this season, including allowing just three combined runs over his last two starts.
Not much was expected of Trachsel when Baltimore signed him late in spring training following Kris Benson's season-ending shoulder surgery. Trachsel has provided a solid veteran presence to a young rotation, essentially serving as a mentor to Eric Bedard, Adam Loewen and Daniel Cabrera, each of whom is close to a decade his junior.
The Tigers will counter with Nate Robertson (2-1, 2.43). The veteran lefthander has been strong so far this season. He has yet to surrender more than three earned runs in any of his six starts.
Robertson picked up a win April 10 in Baltimore, holding the Orioles to just four hits in 7 1/3 shutout innings.
