Red Sox RHP Beckett seeks sixth win of season

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox will be going for a split of their two-game series when they host the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.

The Red Sox send Josh Beckett to the mound in search of his major-league leading sixth win. Boston's No. 2 starter is sixth in the American League with a 2.48 ERA and has struck out 28 while issuing just seven walks in 32 2/3 innings this season.

With a win Wednesday, Beckett (5-0, 2.48 ERA) would become the first Red Sox pitcher since Roger Clemens in 1991 to win his first six starts of the year. Clemens won his third Cy Young award that season.

The A's will counter with Chad Gaudin (1-1, 2.54). The converted reliever has been a pleasant surprise for Oakland this season, yielding just one earned run in three of his five starts.

Gaudin is part of an Athletics rotation that has yielded more than four earned runs in a start just once in 26 games to begin the 2007 campaign.

Oakland took the first game of the series, 5-4, on Tuesday when they got to All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning. Travis Buck hit a two-run homer off Papelbon to tie the game and the A's went on to win in the 10th.
