Pettitte takes mound for injury-plagued Yankees
May 2, 2007 - 3:10 PM NY Yankees (10-14) at Texas (10-16) 8:05 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees are coming off a win that feels more like a loss.
Andy Pettitte (1-1, 3.00 ERA) takes the mound for the Yankees in his home state in the middle game of a three-game series with the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.
The Yankees earned just their second win in their last 10 games on Tuesday, but it came at a steep price. Phil Hughes, the Yankees' top prospect carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but left with a hamstring injury that will keep him out four to six weeks.
It was the latest in a rash of injuries to the New York pitching staff. Mike Mussina (hamstring), Carl Pavano (forearm) and Jeff Karstens (leg) are all on the disabled list.
Pettitte's opponent will be Robinson Tejeda (3-1, 3.82), who is pitching the best of any Texas starter. In his last start, Tejada allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts in a 5-3 win over Toronto last Thursday.
Texas did not manage a hit in the opener until Hank Blalock led off the eighth inning with a double.
