Pettitte looks to soothe Yankees' pitching woes
May 3, 2007 - 3:00 PM NY Yankees (10-14) at Texas (10-16) 3:35 pm EDTARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees are coming off a win that feels more like a loss.
Andy Pettitte takes the mound for the Yankees in his home state in the opening game of a doubleheader with the Texas Rangers on Thursday.
Wednesday night's game was postponed due to rain.
The Yankees earned just their second win in their last 10 games on Tuesday, but it came at a steep price. Phil Hughes, the Yankees' top prospect, carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, but left with a hamstring injury that will keep him out four to six weeks.
It was the latest in a rash of injuries to the New York pitching staff. Mike Mussina (hamstring), Carl Pavano (forearm) and Jeff Karstens (leg) are all on the disabled list.
In response to the injuries and the team's losing record, general manager Brian Cashman on Wednesday fired strength coach Marty Miller.
The Yankees now turn to Pettitte (1-1, 3.00 ERA), who added to the team's woes in his last start, giving up five runs and six hits with five walks in 4 2/3 innings of an 11-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox last Friday.
Despite that latest stumble, Pettitte has fared well on the road this season, going 1-0 with a 1.33 ERA in four games - three starts.
The Rangers will counter with ace Kevin Millwood (2-3, 5.88 ERA). The veteran righthander has gotten off to a rough start this season, yielding five runs in each of his last three starts.
