Yankees RHP Mussina makes his return against Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees have had a tough time keeping their pitchers off the disabled list.

On Thursday, Mike Mussina will make his return from a pulled hamstring when the Yankees visit the Texas Rangers in the second game of a doubleheader.

Mussina (0-1, 9.00 ERA) left his last start on April 11 in the third inning with the injury. At the time, he was just the third New York starter to land on the DL. Others have followed.

The Yankees have used nine starting pitchers thus far, including four rookies. Their starters are averaging less than five innings per start.

The rash of muscle pulls and similar injuries led to the firing of strength coach Marty Miller on Wednesday.

Mussina will try to buck the trend on Thursday night. The veteran righthander yielded six runs in four innings in his first start on April 6.

Mussina's opponent will be Robinson Tejeda (3-1, 3.82), who is pitching the best of any Texas starter. In his last start, Tejeda allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings with seven strikeouts in a 5-3 win over Toronto last Thursday.
