Shields, Devil Rays look to take second straight vs. Twins

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- Following an extra-inning win, James Shields takes the hill for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays when they face the Minnesota Twins in the finale of a three-game series on Thursday.

Elijah Dukes and Ty Wigginton sparked a comeback with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Devil Rays went on to beat the Twins, 4-3, in 10 innings Wednesday.

Inconsistent as a rookie last season, Shields (2-0, 3.75 ERA) posted a 6-8 record with 4.84 ERA in 21 starts. However, the righthander has been more solid in his second campaign, working at least seven innings in each of his five starts.

In his last outing, the 25-year-old Shields pitched eight strong innings, allowing one run and four hits with nine strikeouts and a walk in a 4-1 victory at Oakland on Friday.

The Twins will counter with Ramon Ortiz (3-1, 2.57), who is 6-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 10 starts vs. the Devil Rays in his career.

He will look to become the team's first four-game winner Thursday. The righthander has churned out stellar performances this season, including a solid outing but did not pick up the decision in a 5-3 win against Detroit last Friday. He yielded two runs, five hits and four walks in six innings.

Minnesota has won four of its last six games.
